A very good overview of the incel movement. There is a striking similarity to the MAGA movement.

New rituals for belonging—the biggest project we need to complete for society flourishing. It feels like the existential crises can’t be properly tackled without tending to the foundations of our human desire to belong.

I was about to reply, but realized that what I wanted to share was too large.

Good read. I'd argue this engineering is not contemporary with incel movement - this is the arc, structure, nature and consequence to mass market pornography.

The greatest criminal in modern history was Hugh Hefner. He (and others) turned Western male sexuality from participant to voyeur. You can watch, but never participate in any context whatsover other than pay for the image to masturbate over.

The one-handed incel at his lonely keyboard in Mom's basement is the fourth generation victim.

My gut reaction is to hate forums (incorrect) but it's because there are also forums doing this to other "psychologically developing" humans (in all age ranges) that do similar things (body image/multi-level-marketing "Joneses" chasing, etc.)....Is there a "meta" solution to harmful forums? They have a right to exist, and a right to speak freely...but they're clearly doing exactly what you delineated...Just curious, as I never used forums, don't plan to, but I have three kids...

I don't think forums are the issue. You're mistaking something you've never used with a larger cultural milieux that you are understandable repulsed by. Just because the cultural milieux is associated with the technology, does not mean the technology is responsible for the milieux.

I thought my "incorrect" was addressing that. I was sold, by your piece, but I was explaining my "larger fear" of open spaces that we cannot just "legislate away" (Instagram is another example) where people can "prey" on others self-esteem to push agendas that harm us all, not just them. My gut reaction is NEVER my overall stance on anything (if it were, I'd be a huge mess). But your article struck that spot in me that worries about yet another thing I can't possibly control. Meanwhile, the path to what we both want is exactly what you outlined in Metaviews 189, which is to create open forums (online and irl) that help people!

I am repulsed by most cultures I've lived in and studied, but I'm more repulsed by the idea of leaving all that and pretending I want to live in a utopia devoid of humanity. So I have to accept it all as I work hard to do what I can to brighten others' existences, even when my ego tries to warn me about how it hinders my selfish desires (which are BS). Metaviews 189 was seriously incredible. Thanks again.
