I will be in France early June but will definitely try to connect! Keep writing about Israel, Gaza and the West Bank. As a Jew, I am appalled by what is happening and not talking/writing about it, is condoning the genocide.
On Signal: I'm looking forward to when two Android devices can be linked. My primary mobile device is a Chromebook. While I can have one Android phone and a Linux desktop paired, I can't pair with my Chromebook.
I don't read "think pieces" on my phone, and I'm not in my basement near my desktop very often, which has made participation in the Signal chat very infrequent.
"Speaking of which, we’ve received multiple negative responses to our writing on Israel and Gaza, as a result expect more writing on Israel and Gaza. 😝"
I wish there was a way for me to get notifications of these comments you sometimes mention. Hard to engage with a larger community without knowing anyone else is engaging, or where that engagement is happening.
There is a specific author I follow that I find very insightful. Anishinaabe and Ukrainian ancestry, and at one time considered herself Christian. Also someone who believes in lifelong learning, and putting books in conversation with each other.
In reply to a MEME saying, "A whole lot of Christian Zionists in North America demanding that we recognize Israel's ancient claim to sole possession of Jerusalem have little trouble ignoring indigenous claims to their historic land"
To which she replied:
"This is not incoherent. Israel's origin story is that of colonizer. They became a people in Egypt, at Sinai, and then entered the land God gave them where the work of building a nation-state took place.
This is exactly how western states see themselves. Occupying lands that God gave them and then building a nation state to maintain their authority over it.
What is missing from these contemporary states are the rules about being welcoming and generous to those who live within their borders. Once the conquest of Canaan was complete the tone shifts towards one of generosity and care. Property ownership was not a thing, kinship was primary.
My Jewish friends wrestle with this narrative btw. They see it as a dark period in ancient nation building that resulted in more problems than it solved and wonder if there might have been a better way to enter Canaan. The text is filled with examples of people arguing with God, so the question is why didn't they argue when God orders genocide? They take the question onto themselves as we all should when those in leadership claim to be speaking for God.
It's also worth noting that this narrative was written during or after the period of captivity in Babylon. Giving them their own imperial past."
